How Deutsche Telekom created a proof of concept to discuss its future Metaverse Experience!

Deutsche Telekom is the leading telecommunications provider in Germany, and it provides a suite of products and services for its consumers.

Since 2018, Iconic Engine has provided services within its Metaverse Engine™ to power the MagentaVR application for Deutsche Telekom as a social, cross-platform, co-watching experience. In 2020,Deutsche Telekom used Iconic Engine’s Metaverse Engine™ to create MagentaXR, a next-gen showcase within Deutsche Telekom for the capabilities of the Metaverse.

An Internal Showcase for Stakeholder Buy-In

Deutsche Telekom needed to showcase what was possible internally as there was not a big push toward the Metaverse.

Deutsche Telekom needed to accomplish the following:

  1. Connect with Deutsche Telekom’s Identity Management System to own the customer relationship
  2. Merge in MagentaTV offerings within an XR platform to provide a plethora of video content
  3. Provide a social experience for users to connect with one another
  4. Target cross platform on Head-mounted Displays (HMDs) including Nreal (AR) and Quest (VR) as well as iOS and Android phones (mobile)

Connect with Deutsche Telekom’s Identity Management System to own the customer relationship

Deutsche Telekom wants to ensure that it maintains the user relationship it has built. Iconic Engine’s Metaverse Engine™ is designed to integrate other customer’s technology including Identity Management Systems (IDMs) and provides partners with the ability to own and manage partners’ customer relationships.

Iconic Engine can work within PII laws globally including GDPR in the EU and even locally with Schrems II. Iconic Engine was able to provide an integration of Deutsche Telekom’s IDM, which allows Deutsche Telekom to keep its customers' data within its own digital jurisdiction.

Merge in MagentaTV offerings within an XR platform to provide a plethora of video content

Deutsche Telekom offers a Video on Demand Over the Top (VoD OTT) service comparable to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other services called MagentaTV. Part of the goal and initiative is preparing documentation and information on how to integrate MagentaTV into a Metaverse.

Iconic Engine’s Metaverse Engine™ is open to 3rd party integrations as well as providing a full Content Management System (CMS) capable of streaming VoDs and live events. Iconic Engine worked closely with Deutsche Telekom and their 3rdparty service provider on a roadmap for technology integration.

Provide a social experience for users to connect with one another

MagentaVR has hundreds of thousands of users per year with 10% of users participating in co-watching. Deutsche Telekom wanted to create a more social experience for its customer base.

Using the Metaverse Engine™, Deutsche Telekom and Iconic Engine created an experience where users can not only get together to watch sports and entertainment content but also get to practice their golf drive and defend their soccer/football goal.

Target cross platform on Head-mounted Displays (HMDs) as well as iOS and Android phones (mobile)

Deutsche Telekom looks ahead to new technology including VR HMDs as well as AR HMDs, but it also must provide its service to its subscriber base on mobile devices.

MagentaXR is built to be cross-platform and cross-play. It is accessible via Quest headsets, Nreal AR headsets, as well as Android and iPhone mobile devices. This means that friends and family can hop in regardless of device and engage in the metaverse together.

An Internal Success for Metaverses

MagentaXR remains an internal testbed for Deutsche Telekom team alignment and Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Hottges has continued to discuss the need for metaverses in public conversations.
