Iconic Engine, a global XR platform provider, was recruited by T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) over the summer to build the ultimate high tech baseball fan experience for the T-Mobile Suite in Seattle using augmented reality glasses from Nreal. Located right behind home plate in beautiful T-Mobile Park, home to the Seattle Mariners, this luxury suite comes to life for lucky fans as soon as they put on the glasses. Working in partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Mariners, teams from Iconic Engine and T-Mobile produced a rich extended reality look into baseball for suite visitors.
John Saw, Executive Vice President of Advanced & Emerging Technologies at T-Mobile praised the project, noting that Iconic Engine is “doing incredible work developing the next generation of XR streaming applications.” Read more of Dr. Saw’s write-up on the T-Mobile Suite XR experience over at the T-Mobile newsroom.
Amit Chopra, Founder and CEO of Iconic Engine, characterized the industry as reaching a major milestone. “We’re at an inflection point where the power of new mobile devices, a cutting edge 5G network, and state of the art computer vision are combining to weave data into the sports fan’s experience in amazing ways. We see our job as building the very best of the XR applications and expanding this new medium.”
Using the Nreal headset guests are greeted by life sized volumetric videos, including from Mariners star Mitch Haniger, allowing them to visit with Haniger in 3D as if he was in the suite with them. The walls of the suite pop to action with rich scoreboards and real time stats from the game, videos of the players, and all kinds of other surprises. Even the Mariner Moose, always a favorite, hangs out in the suite with guests, reacting in real time to game events, from fireworks and cheers when the M’s score a run, to more sullen reactions when the M’s run into trouble.
Expect more exciting announcements from these companies, as T-Mobile and Iconic Engine have already begun discussions of how to move this technology further and widen the reach dramatically of who can experience cutting edge XR powered by best of breed 5G networks.
